A comedy by Joseph Kesselring - Dramatists Play Service

Sep 30, Oct 1,2,7,8,9,10,14,15,16. Show time 8:00pm, except Oct 10 2:00pm.

In 1941, New Yorkers were looking for some entertainment to take their minds off of the war in Europe. The hilarious new play by Joseph Kesselring, Arsenic and Old Lace did just that! The play became an immediate critical and popular success, running for 1,444 performances.  In 1944, Hollywood produced a film version staring Cary Grant that was a huge box office success. This fall OLT brings this delightful piece of theatre to the stage as the season opener. The play, an entertaining combination of the farcical and the macabre, centres on two elderly sisters famous in their Brooklyn neighborhood for their numerous acts of charity. Unfortunately their 'charity' also includes poisoning lonely old men who come to their home looking for lodging! The two women are assisted in their crimes by their mentally challenged nephew who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt . Matters get complicated when a second nephew, a theatre critic, discovers the murders and a third nephew appears after having just escaped from a mental institution. Audiences will love this adroit mixture of comedy and mayhem.

Based on the story of Anna Leonowens, an English widow and her young son who, in 1862, arrive in Bangkok to tutor the King of Siam's many children.  A colourful and thoroughly entertaining worldwide favourite bursting with gorgeous music, clever lyrics and loaded with "colourful" characters, colourful costumes and loveable children.  A must-see family event, based on the book Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon. The musical opened on Broadway in 1951 and was the sixth collaboration for the team of Rodgers and Hammerstein. It ran for 1,246 performances, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical, among other awards. It spawned numerous revivals and a popular 1956 film version. Oshawa Little Theatre brings yet another classic piece of musical theatre to our stage!

PLAY ON

tn_Play On cut.jpg

A comedy by Rick Abbott - Samuel French publishers

Jan 27,28,29, Feb 3,4,5,6,10,11,12 2011  Evening performances at 8:00pm except Feb 6 at 2:00pm

The theatre company is preparing to stage "Murder Most Foul", from rehearsal to stage, to the disastrous dress rehearsal, to an 'interesting' first night. A process that among other things is not helped by an author who is constantly rewriting the script, a very crabby director, the sarcastic Saul who enjoys a drink too many and an on stage relationship which seems to be extending to an off stage one too. All this could lead to trouble, if "Murder Most Foul" makes it to a second night.   Could there be anything more suitable than a theatre group doing a play about a .... theatre group?   A side-splitting theatrical romp in which anything that can go wrong does.  Even the sound effects reap their share of laughter. Let  your  laughter chase those winter blues away!

Waiting for The Parade

tn_Waiting cut.jpg

A dramatic comedy by John Murrell - Samuel French publishers

March 17,18,19,24,25,26,27,31, April 1,2  2011. Evening shows at 8:00pm except March 27 at 2:00 pm

In this play five Calgary women respond very differently to civilian life during WW II, providing a moving portrait of  Canadian wartime life in the 1940s  .

The play is episodic in structure, each scene presenting a vignette often accompanied by  some great music  from the era .  When playwright John Murrell was commissioned to write a Canadian history play in 1977, he interviewed people who had lived through the war, and found that the stories he liked best were those of the women. In his programme note for the Shaw Festival production, Murrell expresses his belief that “women are the connective tissue which allows the human race to keep faith that normal life will ultimately return. Women remind us, with wit and resilience, of the great importance of family, and also that family is not everything; of the great importance of patriotism, and also that patriotism is not everything. Their pragmatism is utterly heroic. Celebrate our heritage and relive the 1940's in this piece of Canadiana.
